Tab over to License to read the terms in full. The basic idea is you can use the tones freely in your apps, as long as you are not reselling our content as sound effects.
If you like what you hear but need more in terms of sound design or music, we may be interested in providing custom sound for your project. Please get in touch and we can discuss your needs further.
The dev_tones package does not include a license for RCP's library of ringtones. If you would like to license our ringtones for any purpose, please contact us for more information.
In order to make things easy for dev_tones users, no DRM is used on any of our sound files. We ask that you please do not share the tones with non-purchasers of our product. When you purchase dev_tones you are not just buying the tones, but the right to use them. Thank you for understanding.
As a paying license holder of dev_tones, you are allowed to use the tones free of charge and royalty free in your projects (such as films, videos, games, presentations, animations, stage plays, radio plays, audio books, apps) be it for commercial or non-commercial purposes.
But you are NOT allowed to:
EXCEPT TO THE EXTENT REQUIRED BY APPLICABLE LAW, IN NO EVENT WILL LICENSOR BE LIABLE TO YOU ON ANY LEGAL THEORY FOR ANY SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, PUNITIVE OR EXEMPLARY DAMAGES ARISING OUT OF THIS LICENSE OR THE USE OF THE WORK, EVEN IF LICENSOR HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.
If you would like to credit or link to us in your app or project, we would certainly appreciate it, but it is not required.
Audacity is an excellent sound editing application for Mac, PC, and Linux that should be installed on every computer ever. You can use our tones as building blocks for new sounds by opening them in Audacity and adding effects or combining sounds.
Highlight part or all of the sound in audacity and select Effect > Change Pitch. Move the slider to the left or right and preview the sound. Next try the Echo effect (start with a Delay time of .2 seconds and a Decay factor of .3 or so). Other useful effects to try are Amplify, Change Speed, Equalization, and Reverse.
While you have one sound open in Audacity, you can drag another one right in under it to combine sounds. Move them around and experiment with different combinations. This can yield some very interesting results.
We've tried our best to name the tones as appropriately as possible, but don't let them influence your use of them. An "off" tone could be used for an "on" tone, for instance. Mix and match the tones to create a unique soundset for your app, regardless of the names.
Good UI/UX design should inform, not annoy. Be careful with the overuse of sound in your app and make sure your sounds are never too intrusive or too loud. While there's a large amount of sounds included in the dev_tones package, that's only intended so you can find the right sounds, not use all of them! See some examples of good audio UX design at the very cool Beyond the Beep tumblr.
